Wireless range of your router depends upon the Wi-Fi it supports. You need to see whether it supports 802.11n or 802.11g. Also, check if any walls are there that can cause obstruction to the Wi-Fi signal. The Wi-Fi range of 802.11n routers is quite higher. Even if you use any of these routers, the signals may not cover areas like corner of the room or the basement.
Expand the Range of Your Wireless Network with an Old Router
What measures should one take so that the Wi-Fi signals can cover every corner of your home? TheWi-Fi network can be extended by using hardware such as Wireless Access Points and Wi-Fi repeaters. Else, you can also use an old router.

The dimensions of the premises shown in the image above are 100ft x 200ft. The internet is accessible in every corner of the home. It is a very simple setup. The connection is fixed between theWireless-N router and ISP provide modem. Wireless-G and main router are connected with Cat-5 cable and Ethernet.
Make the Second Router Your Access Point
The router which is already in use is given the name OBAMA whereas the router which is used to increase the wireless range is named as PALIN.
1) Know the Main Router’s Settings
Step 1: Check out OBAMA’s IP address. Go to Windows Run box and type
cmd /k ipconfig
The ‘Default Gateway’ will give a value. Note it down. This is the IP address of your router.
Suppose the IP address of the router is 192.168.30.1.
Step 2: Type the IP address of your router in address bar of the web browser. Add http:// in the address bar in case of Internet Explorer. Router settings are only accessible with a password. This depends upon the manufacturer of your router.
Step 3: Check out the wireless settings and note down the SSID, channel and wireless mode.
In case your Wi-Fi is password protected, keep a note of the secret passphrase and security mode that has been used (WPA2, WEP or WPA)
2) Install Second Router
Step 4: Configure the second router, PALIN.
PALIN should be reset to the factory defaults by pressing reset button. PALIN can be connected to your system by using Ethernet cable. The cable should be attached with LAN ports and Ethernet port. The router should be powered on.
Step 5: Type 192.168.1.1 in the browser. PALIN has 192.168.1.1 as its default IP address. Type 192.168.0.1 in case Linksys router is not in use. This is the IP address of D-Link and Netgear routers.
Once it is done, the values of wireless mode, security mode, default SSID, passphrase and the channel need to be changed so that these gel with the OBAMA router.
Go to Advanced routing in Setup. The existing mode, Gateway, should be changed to Router. AsOBAMA router assigns IP addresses to various devices, the DHCP server should be disabled.
Change the PALIN router’s IP address to any other address in LAN. Change IP address 192.168.30.1 of OBAMA to 192.168.30.2 for PALIN. Save the settings.
3) Connect the Routers
Connect the routers with wires.
There are give ports in OBAMA router. Connect WAN port with ISP provide modem. Connect the LAN Ports of the routers with the help of Ethernet cable.

The setup is complete. Connect your mobile devices and computer to second router with the help ofWi-Fi and any wired connection.
Second router has the same security settings and SSID so there is no need to configure anything. You must remember that we are not making a new wireless network. We are only working on the expansion of its reach. You can access your music, shared folders, other files, photos and libraries from all mobile devices and computers.
