Yes, the race is indeed on. So far it’s Tata Docomo on Diwali, Airtel By the year’s end and Vodafone in early 2011. Now Aircel has revealed that a commercial launch of its 3G services is likely in the next 2 months. Chennai and Coimbatore will be first on the list. The company also stated that it would be investing $500 million for the rollout of its 3G spectrum.

The service provider which has a 47 million subscriber base and a Pan-India presence has 3G spectrum in 13 circles. 200 base stations across the country will be used to beam these 3G signals. Chief Operating Officer, Mr Gurdeep Singh said that the entire operation will be self funded. They expect 3G services to be a driver to increase revenues from VAS and Data, which are currently pegged at a low 10 percent.
Aircel, also became to first telecom player to announce 3G Experience Zones, not surprisingly, in Chennai. At these zones, prospective customers will be walked through Aircel’s services in the 3G space like 3G PocketInternet, IVVR (Interactive Video Voice Response) and Video Calls. These zones have been set up at the following places in Chennai :
- Atrium2, Spencers Plaza
- Fun City, Express Avenue
- Atrium Citi Centre
- Aircel Store PH road

Aircel, certainly has the right idea with this campaign. Cashing in(not literally) early on the 3g curiosity where it is a Market Leader. It could win many customers through this initiative. And it doubles up as an excellent PR campaign at a time when Tata Docomo is likely to grab a lot of attention with its impending 3G launch.
